March 18, 2023

In a recent Dr Oz show, Dr Oz refers to reports that state that 40% of Americans are B12 deficient. A startingly high number. How do you know if you are B12 dificient? Here are the symptoms:

– Do you suffer from an overall lack of energy?

– Do you suffer from mood changes?

– Do you have difficulty concentrating or remembering things?

– Unusual mood changes?

– Tingling or numbness in your feet?

In addition, those people who have any of the following in their lives are more at risk of having a B-vitamin deficiency:

· Age – Especially after age 50, the amount of acid (HCl) we produce decreases. The acid produced in the stomach is needed to help with B-vitamin absorption.
· Alcohol – causes atrophy of the stomach, decreases HCl production, impairs absorption of nutrients.
· Birth control pills
· Stress
· Some medications (H2 blockers which decrease HCl production)
· Aspirin
· Diet – people who eat vegetarian diet, may be B12 deficient.

What does Vitamin B12 do and how important is it for your body and well being?

· Helps with RBC formation
· Metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, protein
· Brain function
· Utilization of Neurotransmitters
· Helps with liver detoxification
· To support the normal function of nerve cells, and to manufacture myelin, the insulating material that surrounds some of our nerve cells and speeds neural transmission
· Required for the replication of DNA

People can also take B12 orally from food or as a supplement. According to a report by the National Institute of Health (NIH), absorption of B12 is close to 65% but decreases with age, alcohol, medications, etc. As an injectable form of B12, 100% is absorbed.
